Welcome!  We will launch the 2017 Forum by getting to know MWFOF and each other.  Make the connections that will serve as the foundation for our time together over the next two days. Following an introductory program, we will enjoy drinks and a wide range of hors d'oeuvres during an informal reception.

Breakfast Session: It’s Your Life - Each person takes the opportunity to bring a real life questions or issues to the table for a mini-brainstorming session over breakfast

Family Relations Plenary:  You and Your Family

Featured families include the Scott and Laird Norton Families.  Based in Wyoming and Montana, the Scott Family is a 6th Generation family enterprise composed of family businesses including, but not limited to, the First Interstate Bank, a Family Office, and Family Council. The Laird Norton Family is a 160 year-old family business based in Seattle Washington.

 

In a moderated interview with questions and discussion with the group, Randy Scott, a Family Leader, and Langdon Evans, a rising generation family member and relationship manager for Trusted Family, will share some of their experiences with participant families and discuss what has worked and what has not.

  • Identity, connection, communication, openness and transparency

  • Family values, succession, conflict resolution

  • Family members feeling valued and capable separate from family wealth and growing up successfully in the shadow of a successful older generation

Mining our Collective Wisdom (lunch session) 

​Small-group dialogue around priority topics as determined by participants and their families.  Lunch will include optional Table Topics (tables designated for attendees interested the same topics).  As appropriate, lessons and invitations for continued conversations will be brought back to the whole.

Family Wealth Plenary:  The Money

 

Striking a balance between asset management and stewardship, while adding value of ownership, Lucy Beshara and Jenny Lamsens, fourth and fifth generation family members of a Texas ranching enterprise, discuss the challenges faced with the addition of each new generation and possible solutions.

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm               

Facilitated Breakout Discussions on topics raised during Plenary; examples include:

  • Family Office, Private Trust Company

  • Succession – Passing the baton:  Who from the family works in the Family Office, Business or Private Trust Company and when?

  • Financial education/ literacy. When and how does a family teach the next generation about the wealth?

  • When and how is family wealth is deployed and for what purposes?

  • Family Bank

Your Time

Use this time to deepen relationships, continue conversations, process the first day, and/or take a break.  Onsite and offsite options may include: Fireside / Poolside Chats, Canyon Walk and Talks, etc.

Two generations of the Phillips Family--owners of Blue Sky Utah--will welcome us and engage in a discussion about their experience working together to build a family business and legacy

The Family Legacy Now and in the Future

How does a family create the culture and stewardship that allows it to continue to have positive impact on the community and the family in the future; Be it staying in business as a strong corporate citizen or impactful family philanthropic endeavor that betters the world? The Panel will discuss how this can be accomplished and share what has worked, what has not and what can be learned.

Putting it into Practice:  Hotel conference rooms available by reservation for families or peer groups to meet and incorporate learnings from MWFOF 2017 into their work

Arrangements can be made to experience the local sites and attractions, including:  walking / hiking / biking, tour of the Olympic Museum, tour of the High West Distillery / Saloon, Art Gallery Hopping / Shopping, etc.

 

Thursday evening   

No host dinner; Participants who wish to have one more meal together may do so at their option.
